Brendan G. Murphy is a twenty-nine year old filmmaker originally from New York and currently residing in Los Angeles, California where he has spent the last six years building the foundation for a formidable future in the Entertainment Industry. Writer, Producer, Director and Editor, Brendan is CEO and President of independent production company Altered State Entertainment, LLC. The company not only produces independent projects but also works in correlation with various clients such as Disney & the ABC Cable Networks Group, Maverik Lacrosse and various musical artists. Brendan is using the lens to send a profound message: “Open your eyes,” as quoted in the “up and coming talent” section of Outbreak Magazine´s January 2008 issue. “We are the future. We are in the center of a new artistic revolution. We have a lot to say and there´s no better time to express ourselves …than right now.”
After making the move west, Brendan has since spent a great deal of time meticulously perfecting his craft. His first short film “NUMB” was a 2004 official selection in the New Jersey International Film Festival, Las Grazas International Film Festival, Philadelphia Video Festival and the Fall River Film Festival. Brendan´s music video directorial debut earned him a write up in the April 2004 issue of Rolling Stone Latin America for band CAGE9´s (BMG) single “Sick of It!” Brendan´s second short film “Wasted” won the honor of “Audience Choice Award for Best Short” at the 2006 Other Venice Film Festival.
On the editing front, after graduating from Hofstra University with a BA in Film Production, Brendan began editing professionally at the mere age of twenty-two. His first year out of college, two pieces he edited for a New York entertainment show received nominations for the NY Emmy Awards. He presently freelances for Disney & the ABC Cable Networks Groups and has been doing so for the past five years. However Brendan´s editing skills are not confined to any one arena; the knowledge and experience he has acquired within his own life have allowed him to diversify, editing in genres such as: reality, sports, talk, entertainment, commercial, corporate, network, promos, trailers, film, and music videos. His clients have included Columbia Tri-Star Television, Telepictures, King World Entertainment, Rysher & Paramount Television, Proctor & Gamble, Saatchi & Saatchi, The YES Network, Hurricane Entertainment, Avoca Productions, The Metro Channel, North River Productions, Pepsi, L´Oreal, The Rolling Stones and Terminal Bliss Pictures to name a few. While in New York Brendan appeared as a guest VJ on MTV as well as the MUCH Music USA music network. He also guest hosted on New York´s Metro Channel show “New York Central.” Brendan chose to further his education by studying method acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute while working as a full time editor in New York City
Brendan´s latest projects continue having him expose the gamut of his talents to the world. Passionately devoted to the arts, Brendan also preserves a love of sports and felt thrilled by the opportunity to direct a commercial for The Maverik Lacrosse Company. By fusing “Native American influences with modern day flare,” Brendan says, “the end product is a super charged bullet of action.” Most recently, Brendan completed a music video for independent artist Malea McGuiness´ single “Sweet Light.” After premiering in Hollywood to rave reviews, MTV International quickly swept up the video for international release. Currently, Brendan has two feature length films in development, one an original sports drama and the other, a coming of age story set in New York City. Production on the latter is set to begin by the end of 2008.
Upon exploring both the personal and creative motivations behind Brendan´s work-he has cited not only cinematic masters like Kubrick and Scorsese but playwright William Shakespeare and visual artist Salvador Dali as primary influences-it is clear that Brendan´s knowledge and understanding of the power of platform are the essential ingredients for his own artistic development. Brendan's passion and unyielding drive have propelled him further toward his goals than most ever achieve. He manipulates the lens of a camera as a means of exposing truth from a perspective grounded in both beauty and chaos. Film has always played an instrumental role in Brendan's life, reinforcing his own passion to inspire. His genuine love of cinema, especially for that of the independent movie scene, is clearly evident within his own work. A natural-born leader, Brendan has never been one to conform to standard conventions and is notorious amongst his peers for employing guerilla filmmaking tactics in painstaking pursuit of the `perfect shot.' Intensely fusing the essentials of writing, producing, directing, acting and editing, Brendan is deeply committed to sculpting his vision of becoming one of the great film directors.
